$5.99 Amafu Cellars Semillon Breedekloof South Africa 2020
Amafu, meaning “clouds” in Zulu, is perfectly named to honor the Breedekloof appellation in South Africa where it is produced. Breedekloof, while being one of the smallest appellations in South Africa, is also one of the most important. This area boasts abundant sunshine, and its altitude assures cooling influences which allows the Semillon grape to hit its highest point of perfection.
Semillon has historically been grown as a blending grape for the Bordeaux region, but the Semillon that grows in South Africa is so wonderfully flavorful, it stands on its own without blending. Amafu Cellars Semillon is full-bodied, with delicate yellow peach and mango flavors. There are notes of banana and fig to round out this nearly exotic White. Semillon is well known for being the ultimate food wine and pairs well with a wide range of cuisine, from clam chowder to grilled salmon and even strong cheeses like Roquefort or Gorgonzola.
